Version 2.0 of the Online Dental Radiography Simulator includes automated analysis of virtual radiographs that students take within the simulator. Analysis and feedback are provided when the virtual radiograph is placed within the virtual FMX on the View Box page of the simulator.
The goal is to provide instant feedback to students to increase the speed of learning. As with AI systems used to analyze clinical images, we do not expect that this system will be perfect, but we hope that it will be helpful.
Version 2.0 is ready for beta testing by educators and schools that are interested in providing feedback.
This version analyzes virtual radiographs placed within the FMX for the following three potential issues:
• Are the required areas of anatomy included in the virtual radiograph?
• Is there overlap of teeth?
• Is the correct XCP used?
Feedback on vertical angulation is not provided as we did not find a definitive reference for the appropriate range of vertical angulation for each projection.
As in the first screenshot below, a red border displayed around an image indicates that a possible error was identified related to incomplete coverage of anatomy or overlapping of teeth. A green frame indicates that neither of those two issues was identified by the system.

As below, additional information is displayed over images where possible errors were identified. Red circles identify areas of possible errors. In the Right Molar Bitewing image below, the red area indicates incomplete coverage of the crowns of teeth 1 and 32, which are listed at the bottom of the image. In the Mandibular Right Molar image below, red circles are shown in the areas of incomplete coverage of the roots of teeth 30 and 31.

As in the image below, the blue area on the right displays details of possible errors identified by the system within the last image placed into the virtual FMX. Right-clicking on any image within the FMX displays these details for at image.

When you test this new automated analysis and feedback feature, we would appreciate feedback on the following:
- Are there any errors identified by the system that are not true errors? If so, please provide a screenshot showing the issue.
- Did the system fail to identify any errors that should have been identified? If so, please provide a screenshot showing the issue.
- Did you encounter any other problems with the system? If so, please provide a screenshot showing the issue.
- How could the system be improved?
- Do you think this would be helpful to your students?
- Do you think this would be helpful to educators, for example by decreasing work providing initial feedback to students?
- Do you have any other input on the system?
